One Month Visit

Ruby just got back from her one month doctor visit, and her measurements merely reinforce what we already knew: she's a big girl.
  • Length: 23.25 inches | 98th percentile
  • Weight: 10 lb 15 oz | 93rd percentile
  • Head: 39 cm | 89th percentile
Whew! As you can tell, Emilia and Ruby have been spending a lot of quality time together feeding. Which is what they're doing as I type this.

Ruby Albina's First Christmas

Ruby's first Christmas was spent at our house in Austin, with family coming in from all over the country. Not only did Ruby get to meet Aunt Lo, Uncle Jacob, and the great-grandparents, but she also got to spend some quality time with her grandparents again. She received a plethora of beautiful gifts, including her new favorite book "Tea for Ruby." I'm sure it's one that we'll be reading again and again over the next few years.

We spent most of the week hanging out at home, watching football and playing cards. Ruby loved taking her naps in her great-grandmother's lap- let's hope she adjusts to napping in her crib again now that all the company is gone :)

Some pictures from the week...

Honestly

Does this look like a 20-day old baby? Me thinks not.

All tuckered out

After a long afternoon of crying, eating, and pooping, it's time for a nap.

Slight confusion

Oh, Ruby. My nose is not a nipple, so putting it in your mouth will not accomplish anything. Plus, as Mom said, "snot comes out of there, not milk."

Hook 'em

In honor of Colt McCoy's status as a Heisman finalist, and in anticipation of the awards ceremony this evening, Ruby threw up her first hook 'em. We're teaching her well already.

Hats galore

Mother Martha is great at knitting; some might even say she's obsessed. Emilia asked her to knit three hats, and Martha said she'd be happy to do so.

So today we checked the mail and were excited to see that a package addressed to Ruby had arrived. We opened it and found this:

Yeah. Thirty hats. Ruby will have her choice for quite some time. We could even burn a hat after wearing, and she'd still have a month's supply.

GiGi and Emilia think Ruby's eyes look like mine in this photo. I agree.

Thank you, Mother Martha!

Snow in Austin?

That's right - it happens occasionally. Ruby was able to enjoy her first snowfall last night at about 11:30 pm. We did have to pull her out of her crib ... and she was asleep ... so it's anyone's guess as to how much she actually enjoyed it. Regardless, here are a few pictures.

Ruby loves her Gigi

I have decided that Ruby and her Gigi are kindred spirits...

Last night, I wandered into my parents' room around 2:30am and asked for help with Ruby. David and I had been trying to soothe her for over two hours with no success. I was exhausted and just wanted to get an hour or two of sleep. Gigi gladly agreed and went to the nursery with Ruby while I climbed into bed.

FIVE HOURS LATER, my mother came into the bedroom and woke me. She had kept Ruby happy for a record five hours without eating so that I could get some much needed sleep. Maybe Gigi and Ruby will be the two night owls of the family, up until all hours of the night hanging out together.

Ruby's First Pediatrician's Appointment

We bundled up Ruby, enjoyed the colder weather and went to the doctor for the first time yesterday afternoon. Ruby weighed exactly nine pounds, which is within the normal weight loss range for newborns. The doctor said she expects her to be back to her birthweight in a few days because she's already such a good eater. Ruby measures 93% for weight and 95% in length. Dr. Cepeda said several times that she is "perfect." We agree.

More pictures from the past few days

I'm a MOM!

The last 72 hours have been the most amazing and exhausting of my entire life. I cannot put into words how amazing it feels to finally be a mom and hold my little girl in my arms. David and I just keep looking at her and looking at each other and saying that we can't believe this is all real.

I'm not going to make a long post, as I'm trying to save my energy and get some rest. But I too wanted to post a few pictures of our baby girl for friends and family to see. These are two of my favorite pictures from labor and delivery. My mom and David were at my side the entire time, cheering me on and keeping me focused on the huge reward I was about to receive. Thank you Mom and David.

Everyone, meet Ruby

I'm only going to post a sampling of the thousands (almost) of pictures taken in the last 36 hours. I'm sure Emilia will want to join in and add some more at a future time. Enjoy - we sure are.

Zoolander?

Waving bye and winking. What a talent.

Ruby is here

Ruby Albina arrived Sunday, November 30, at 7:51 am. She's a healthy 9 lb 7 oz and 21.5 inches ... and freakin' gorgeous.

Emilia is feeling excellent, especially considering the labor was all natural. Apparently the nurses have taken to calling her "Wonder Woman," which is well deserved.

We're at the hospital until tomorrow morning. Numerous pictures will be posted then. We love y'all!

The long wait

So the cookies didn't work. Maybe our daughter just doesn't have a sweet tooth.

We're still here, still waiting. There's not much to report, unfortunately. Emilia did make a delicious Thanksgiving dinner for the two of us last night, as we're not sure what exactly we'll be doing on Thursday. See, it's hard to plan anything in advance when you're waiting on the stork to arrive.

Stay tuned.

Due date comes ... and goes

As you know, today was Ruby's due date. I say "was" because, at 11:02 pm, I feel I can make a safe assumption that she won't be arriving tonight. And this is despite our best efforts.

We had previously tried talking nice and explaining to her the awesomeness that awaits her here in our family, but clearly that hasn't worked.

So we decided to bribe her with cookies.

We'll report back on whether this was successful.

"Is she here yet?"

Nope. Not yet.

My boss had a hypothesis on why: "If you were in a temperature-controlled waterbed being fed all the time, would you want to go anywhere?"

Good point.

The Big Reveal

Ruby's nursery has been a work in progress for several months. Last week, Gigi came to help me get organized and get the baby's room ready for her arrival. I say that Gigi "helped" me, but I pretty much sat in my chair while Gigi did all the work.

It's not quite done, but it's already more fabulous than I ever could have imagined. Thank you to Gigi and Poppa for the furniture and window treatments. Thank you to David for all of your hard work painting and lacquering the dresser, putting together the bookcase, installing the closet doors and organizer, and about a thousand other little projects.

A few more pics with some of my favorite details:

A close up of the crib (which was mine) and the stylish bedding handmade by Gigi.

Most of the items on this shelf were gifts from Gigi, including her ballerina from when she was a little girl.

The bookcase with Ruby's growing collection of books, toys and randomness.

Ruby's going to be so smart, just like her mom and dad.

A closet so full of beautiful clothes that it might actually rival Aunt Lo's.

My favorite little corner of the room- David's growth chart from his nursery, my sling, the diaper bag, and the awesome chandelier night light.

And of course, a little longhorn touch to the nursery.

Thanks for looking!
